How we feel and think about ourselves and our internal dialogue, which can be negative or positive, can determine if we have low, healthy or high levels of self-esteem. Ultimately, we want to have a healthy level of self-esteem. If our self-esteem is overly high, then we can be “arrogant” or in other terms, neglecting of other people’s feelings and tend to overlook our own flaws and criticize others.
If our self-esteem is too low, we might struggle with self-respect and building healthy boundaries with others, have difficulty saying “no” when we need to. And constantly judge and criticize ourselves which can lead to anxiety, frustration, depression, self-hate and so forth.
What is Self-Esteem?
A great definition of self-esteem taken from Wikipedia: “Self-esteem is confidence in one’s own worth or abilities. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself (for example, “I am loved”, “I am worthy”) as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame.”

Having a healthy level of high self-esteem means we value self-love, self-care, self-respect, healthy boundaries, self-confidence. We make positive choices and decisions that are good for us and we believe in our abilities and feel good about our accomplishments. We can have better mental health and well-being when we feel, think and speak positively about ourselves.
On the other hand, if we suffer from low self-esteem then we lack confidence, self-love and compassion. We may not believe we deserve to be listened to or respected. We might also be afraid to say “no” out of fear of rejection or conflict and be sensitive to criticism. When it comes to relationships or other areas of life, we may make poor choices and decisions. And we tend to feel powerless, undervalue or devalue ourselves.
